LASIK
What is LASIK?
LASIK (laser assisted in-situ keratomileusis) is a surgery that utilizes femtosecond laser technology for detailed precision in corneal reshaping. This is a bladeless procedure that corrects refractive issues such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism by meticulously sculpting the cornea, the clear dome at the front of the eye. Reshaping the cornea helps to focus light onto the retina for clear vision.
Who is a candidate for LASIK?
Candidates for LASIK generally include individuals with healthy eyes who are looking to become less dependent on glasses or contact lenses for their best vision and whose prescriptions have been stable. If you are are pregnant or nursing, you will need to wait until afterward to move forward with LASIK. A consultation can confirm candidacy and get you a step closer to your vision goals.
What are the benefits and risks of LASIK?
The benefits of LASIK include improved vision, rapid recovery, long-term results, reduced dependence on glasses or contacts, high success rates, and minimal discomfort. Though there are risks with any surgery, LASIK risks are minimal but include dry eyes, glare, complications in healing, and regression or need for enhancement. More than 90% of people who have LASIK are able to perform most of their daily tasks without glasses or contacts.
What is LASIK recovery like?
At the start of the procedure, drops are used to numb the eyes. Most patients describe their experience as painless. While healing, there may be some redness or irritation but prescribed eyedrops can alleviate discomfort during recovery which generally only takes a couple of days. Two days after surgery you should be able to drive without corrective lenses. In the following days and for a few weeks, vision will continue to improve. Activities that increase risk to healing should be avoided for two weeks and may include eye rubbing, contact sports, swimming, hot tubs, and vigorous activities that can cause sweat or pressure in the eyes.
